About LAP flap Breast Reconstruction Procedure
The lumbar artery perforator (LAP) flap is another excellent option for women who are thin or who, for any reason, choose not to use their abdomen, thigh or buttock as a donor site, or source location of the body for the extra tissue, in breast reconstruction.
Almost everyone, even very thin women, have extra fat in the lower back region. This region is referred to as the lumbar area. It is also sometimes referred to as “love handles.”
The lumbar tissue can be used in the same way as a DIEP: skin and fat are harvested based on a perforating blood vessel that goes through tissue and can be taken without muscle damage or sacrifice. The advantages of the LAP flap include a well hidden scar that is behind the patient and an abundance of extra fat which can be harvested and used to make natural, normal looking and feeling breasts.
